ATC-20 Trainings

ATC provides a presenter for ATC-20 training on Postearthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings. The presentation is typically a 5-5½ hour talk with PowerPoint slides as visual aids. It follows the chapter order of the 1989 ATC-20 report, Procedures for Postearthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings (and the 1995 ATC-20-2 report, Addendum to the ATC-20 Postearthquake Building Safety Evaluation Procedures), and the condensed, pocket-sized version, the ATC-20-1 Field Manual. There is an added section on structural basics. It provides examples which allow attendees to evaluate building damage conditions, assess the overall risk from the damage, and recommend which of the three placards in the ATC-20-2 Addendum should be posted on the building. Further case studies illustrating the rapid evaluation techniques are found in the 1996 ATC-20-3 report, Case Studies in Rapid Postearthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings.

Our pool of presenters are experienced in evaluating buildings after earthquakes, has full knowledge of the ATC-20 methods, and can adapt the presentation to meet the requirements, experience, and expertise of almost any audience.  ATC’s fee for a presentation services and expenses vary based on the training location.

Sponsors who contract with ATC for presentation services can buy the ATC-20-3 Case Studies report at the discounted price of $35; the regular price is $50. The Case Studies is a stand-alone report, including revised placards and safety assessment forms that have been updated and modified, based on ATC-20 use following the 1989 Loma Prieta, 1992 Cape Mendocino, 1992 Landers, 1992 Big Bear, and 1994 Northridge earthquakes. The ATC-20 report and the ATC-20-2 Addendum report cost a discounted price of $27.30; the regular price is $39. The Addendum contains the revised placards and forms. The pocket-sized ATC-20-1 Field Manual- Second Edition, which does not include the addendum material,is available for $16.80; the regular price is $24. The placards and forms can be downloaded at no cost here.  Requests for reports should be made sufficiently in advance of the presentation date to ensure their timely arrival; for 100 or more reports, we need three weeks notice.  We ship from our stock using Federal Express. Unused reports may be returned, shipping paid, for credit, less a 10% restocking charge.

(NOTE FOR IN-HOUSE TRAINING: ATC also has available the ATC-20-T Postearthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings Training CD to facilitate the presentation of the ATC-20 materials by other trainers. The discounted price is $24.50; the regular price is $35. This CD contains 230 PowerPoint slides with Speaker Notes.)

The audio-visual requirements for our presentation include an LCD projector and screen, and, for groups larger than about 30, or in a large room requiring amplification, a microphone and PA system.

Although the presentation includes a substantial amount of information on safety evaluation of buildings, and a satisfactory evaluation can subsequently be made by all attendees, ATC Board policy requires that attendees not be "ATC-Certified" nor "ATC-Licensed" by the presentation sponsors as being fully qualified to perform safety evaluation assessments. Such a certification might be misconstrued by others to imply more than it should. (Of course, presentation sponsors can "Sponsor-Certify" the attendees.)

For more information, please contact Bernadette Hadnagy to request pricing and a contract.

For individuals looking for in-person training, please refer to the California Emergency Management Agency's website, or your local Structural Engineers Association, for in-person trainings scheduled.
