The Applied Technology Council (ATC) is pleased to announce the immediate availability of a CD-ROM containing the ATC-20 Training Slide Set for Postearthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings. Developed jointly by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and ATC, the slide set is an updated version of the material previously available in the ATC-20-T Training Manual (ATC, 1993). The slide set has been developed specifically to facilitate the presentation of the contents of the ATC-20 report, Procedures for Postearthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings (ATC, 1989), the ATC-20-1 Field Manual: Postearthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings (ATC, 1989), and the ATC-20-2 report, Addendum to the Postearthquake Building Safety Evaluation Procedures (ATC, 1995). The ATC-20 Training Slide Set is specifically intended for persons who lecture at training seminars on the ATC-20 postearthquake safety evaluation procedures, but would also be of general use to individuals who are called on to educate the public and other professionals about the earthquake performance characteristics of buildings and postearthquake safety evaluation issues.

The ATC-20 Training Slide Set consists of 230 slides, in Microsoft PowerPoint format, containing photographs, schematic drawings, and textual information as well as lecture notes to assist the trainer in making the presentation. The lecture notes can be read verbatim by the trainer (for a ½-day presentation), or can be used as notes to cue the trainer in a less formal presentation. Topics covered include:

• Posting placards and the posting system;
• Detailed and rapid evaluation procedures;
• Basics of structural dynamics and earthquake response of buildings;
• Wood frame structures and damage inspection points;
• Masonry structures and damage inspection points;
• Concrete structures and damage inspection points;
• Steel frame structures and damage inspection points;
• Nonstructural elements;
• Geotechnical hazards;
• Hazardous materials;
• Field safety; and
• Example applications.

Preparation of the slide set was funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency using materials supplied by ATC.
