ATC PUBLISHES ATC-40 REPORT, SEISMIC EVALUATION AND RETROFIT OF CONCRETE BUILDINGS

The Applied Technology Council (ATC) and the California Seismic Safety Commission are pleased to announce the immediate availability of the ATC-40 report, Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of concrete Buildings. This 2-volume, 612-page report provides a recommended methodology for the seismic evaluation and retrofit of older concrete buildings. The methodology focuses specifically on concrete frame buildings, generally constructed from the 1940s to the mid-1970s, and on concrete frame buildings with concrete walls, generally constructed from the early 1900s to the mid-1970s. In general, however, the document provides information on emerging techniques applicable to most building types. The report was prepared under the California Proposition 122 Retrofit Practices Improvement Program, which is administered by the Seismic Safety Commission.

Volume One contains the methodology for evaluation and retrofit of buildings. Specific guidance is provided on the following topics:

Volume Two consists of four example building case study reports, a cost effectiveness study, and a review of research on foundation effects on the seismic performance of concrete buildings.

The report was developed by a multi-disciplinary team of 17 technical consultants, with overview and guidance provided by the Seismic Safety Commission Oversight Panel. Craig D. Comartin, ATC Senior Structural Consultant, served as Principal Investigator (PI), and Richard W. Niewiarowski, Principal, Rutherford & Chekene, San Francisco, served as Co-PI and Project Director.

Copies of the ATC-40 report can be obtained from: Applied Technology Council, 555 Twin Dolphin Drive, Suite 550, Redwood City, California 94065 (Telephone: 650/595-1542; Fax: 650/593-2320; E-mail: atc@atcouncil.org). Check online store for price and shipping costs.
