The Applied Technology Council (ATC) is pleased to announce two events in conjunction with the Structural Engineers World Congress (SEWC) in San Francisco in July 1998: (1) ATC Seminar on Seismic Upgrading of Hazardous Buildings, to be held Thursday, July 16, 1998, and (2) 2nd U.S.-Japan Workshop on Performance-Based Engineering, to be held July 17-18, 1998. Both ATC events will be held in San Francisco at a location in or near the San Francisco Marriott Hotel, home of the SEWC.

The purpose of the ATC Seminar on Seismic Upgrading of Hazardous Buildings is to present new methods and information pertinent to the rehabilitation (retrofit) of seismically hazardous buildings, focusing specifically on engineered buildings. The Seminar program has been developed for design professionals, regulators, and researchers, but also may be of interest to contractors, insurers, owners, and facility managers. The program will address seismic evaluation as well as rehabilitation, and participants will be provided with available state-of-the-art guidelines and procedures manuals. The Seminar is open to the profession at large and other interested participants. Persons interested in attending the Seminar may download our PDF-formatted, Announcement and Registration Information. ATC subscribers will receive a 20% discount on the registration fee.

The 2nd U.S.-Japan Workshop on Performance Based Engineering is sponsored jointly by ATC and the Building Research Institute (BRI) of Japan. The first workshop on this subject, held in January 1997 and attended by 28 earthquake engineering and social science specialists was also sponsored by ATC and BRI. The objectives of the workshop series are:

While the program for the 2nd Workshop has not been finalized, it is expected to cover topics similar to those of the first workshop: (1) performance-based earthquake engineering concepts; (2) current status of performance-based earthquake engineering in professional design practice; (3) current status of performance-based earthquake engineering research; and (4) societal aspects of performance-based earthquake engineering. Participation in the Workshop is by invitation only. Persons interested in participating in the workshop should advise Applied Technology Council in writing. Participants will be asked to pay a modest registration fee to cover the cost of coffee breaks and meals.
