ATC AND JSCA ANNOUNCE 8TH U.S.-JAPAN WORKSHOP ON STRUCTURAL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES

Applied Technology Council (ATC) and the Japan Structural Consultants Association (JSCA) are pleased to announce the Eighth U.S.-Japan Workshop on Improvement of Structural Design and Construction Practices, to be held December 3-5, 1998, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Prior workshops in this series jointly sponsored by ATC and JSCA have been held in Kobe (1996), Victoria (1994), San Diego (1992), Kailua-Kona (1990), Tokyo (1988), San Francisco (1986), and Honolulu (1984). The workshops have provided unique opportunities to discuss state-of-the-art structural engineering issues and socialize with leading engineers from the two countries.

The 1998 Workshop will be held at the Hawaii Imin International Conference Center, located adjacent to the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. The Workshop will include technical presentations by structural/earthquake engineering design practitioners and researchers from the U.S. and Japan, as well as working group discussions and several social functions.

The Workshop program is expected to include papers on the following topics:

Practitioners/researchers interested in being invited to the Workshop and presenting a paper on one of the above topics should submit a brief summary as soon as possible, but no later than October 8, 1998, to the Applied Technology Council, 555 Twin Dolphin Drive, Suite 550, Redwood City, California 94065 (Phone: 650/595-1542; Fax: 650/593-2320; e-mail: atc@atcouncil.org). Selected authors will be notified by October 15, 1998. Final papers (12 pages in length, maximum) will be due November 15, 1998.

As in the past, ATC and JSCA are organizing this workshop on a self-funded basis (i.e., without external funding). Accordingly, all participants will be required to pay their own travel expenses and the Workshop registration fee (approximately $200), which includes workshop luncheons, break refreshments, and workshop preprints. The daily cost of accommodations at the East-West hotel are quite reasonable: $42.00, studio room (single- or double-occupancy); $61.00, 1-bedroom with kitchen (single- or double-occupancy). Airfares between the mainland and Hawaii are also very reasonable at this time of the year (e.g, September 24, 1998 quote by United Airlines for San Francisco-Honolulu roundtrip airfare is $303, departing San Francisco on December 2 and returning December 6).

Come join us in Hawaii!
